"THUNDER"

We connect with each of our dogs in a variety of ways - love them all, but love them differently. Thunder is the dog of Judy's heart. Here is what Judy says about Thunder:

"I held Thunder when he was born. Perhaps that partly explains the strong connection we have. He is always there for me - quietly watching and waiting for any hint of action-- always ready to join in any perceived activity or lie with his head on my lap. Thunder enjoys life to the highest degree and is truly an entertaining dog. When we go to open space for a run with Mosey, Ani, Thunder's half siblings, and other Vizsla friends and relatives, Thunder is most often voted as the dog having the most fun. He runs hard and grins from ear to ear!

Thunder and I watch TV together with him on my lap, as close as he can get. He actually watches and responds to what is happening, checking in with me, lifting his head all the way back to place a kiss on my face. As you might guess, Animal Planet is one of his favorite channels but he does enjoy "Hunting with Hank" and other movies with animals. He watched "Lassie Come Home" from start to finish. He also participates in the program or movie. Sometimes he jumps up to bark at the animals on TV and other times he growls, as when the mountain lion was going after the bear cub in another movie he and I were sharing.

Thunder sleeps on the bed (under the covers) with his head on me. If he gets too warm, he quietly slips out of the covers, but when he then gets cold, he stands up and licks my ear so that I can lift the covers for him to slide under again. He cannot get enough contact!

As is obvious, Thunder is loved by us, but he is also loved by our many Vizsla friends who vie to have him visit whenever we are able to part with him. He sometimes has sleepovers. Our friends, who have our puppies, often take one of our dogs when we are dog sitting for other puppies we have bred. Of our dogs, Thunder is the most eagerly requested. At Amy's house he runs with Kyp during the morning walk at open space and then settles into the household routine with Jamie, Kellie, Jim and Amy. He watches TV and most enjoys pointing at the front-loading washing machine. He has been known to point eggplant in Amy's garden. We can't figure that one out! At Fran's house, he spends quality time with Sara and Fran and especially enjoys the morning run with Merlin - the two boys vying for the title of "Having the Most Fun."

Thunder is our best puppy trainer. He gently puts young pups in their place but never hurts them. Unfortunately, 8 month old Ani, "has his number", often crawling onto a dog bed with him - actually on top of him. He growls and gives her the ugly face during the entire process while she is on her back acting submissive, wagging her tail, moving closer and closer. Then Thunder gives up and licks her, and sucks on her ears. Yuck!

Thunder is a most biddable and talented hunting dog. As a youngster, he was 2 points off a perfect score on the NAVHDA Natural Ability Test. One of the judges said we had to get that dog into a "hunting home." Not to be for our pet!! Each time we did a leg of JH, the judges came to find us and to ask about him, his breeding and where he was from. One judge said we should breed him to every Vizsla around. We do hunt work for our dogs but I don't handle birds. At one test, Thunder pointed, and then when I flushed the bird, Thunder chased and caught it. He brought it back to me and I asked him to drop it, which he did. The bird was alive and the judge was there on his horse. I quietly, with some trepidation said to the judge, "I don't handle birds." Remember, this is a somewhat (?) "macho" sport and I didn't want to take away from Thunder's performance. The judge thought for a moment and then patiently and quietly said, "Do you think you could use two fingers and pick it up by a toe?" I did, but next time gloves for me. Later that same judge came to me and told me with that dog, I'd have to get over my "allergy to birds." Thunder is my inspiration for going on with hunt training. He is so driven, and so, we are driving to attend a hunt seminar in MO in April; and I plan to work to handle him for his SH title.

I love all my dogs, but I can no longer imagine life before or after Thunder."
