"HARVEY"
Lafayette, Colorado

When we first named Harvey, we never realised what a challenge that name would be all his relatives' American owners. We were well aware of tom"a"toes and tom"ar"toes but never H"ar"vey and (wait, let me get all nasal) - H"er"vey.

Either way it doesn't appear to phase the dog that is our ever-present companion.

Part Vizsla, part trashcan, Harvey is a wonderful reminder of an Old Danish proverb - "The dog's kennel is not the place to keep a sausage".

In our home, there is no safe place to keep a sausage. To say Harvey is food-motivate is a huge understatement. He gets up between 5:30 and 6:00 am for breakfast every day and within 30minutes is waiting by the breakfast table "just in case". Every evening he has his supper while we eat dinner and then is compelled to help "tidy out" the dishwasher when we clear the table. If he ever needs a snack, he knows to go steal something from the office, or a shoe from the closet, and bring it to us in the hope we'll make him "out" the item in exchange for a snack. When we're out walking, he 'may' go fetch a ball or a stick from the lake, but throw in a floaty treat and he's diving in - ice or no ice.

Harvey is now retired from the confirmation circuit. A champion with all his points coming from the bred-by category, we were delighted to have Judy show him from the early stages right through to his championship. His scrap-booked ribbons are proud reminders of his achievements and the highs and lows of watching our canine-best-buddy get paraded through the dog world equivalent of Miss World or Mr. Universe.

Now Harvey's attention is given to agility and rally with Michelle and the occasional outing on birds with Ian. A canine good citizen, his training has been a topic of great focus for us ever since he joined our family - after all, properly trained, a man can be a dog's best friend. Harvey throws himself into whatever he does; he runs hard, plays hard and has the easily recharged apparently bottomless pit of energy. He's happiest either playing with his siblings on open space or sleeping with us on the couch in front of a movie.

What ever he does, Harvey is a true Vizsla; you cannot go anywhere without him, not for a moment. He's the sole occupant of the rear half of our car, has a bed in the family room (although he thinks the couch is his), a bed in the office, a bed in the master bedroom (he'd tell you that's just for show) and still wants to be a lap dog most of the time. There's no place to go that Harvey sees as off limits -, as Penny Moser said "I wonder what goes through his mind when he sees us peeing in his water bowl?" Now you know why they join you in the smallest room in the house - just to see what you're doing!

Over the past three years, we've all adapted to this lack of privacy, the obsessive need to put food behind locked doors, the compromise over the best seat in the room and while nobody knows what the future holds, we're sure it'll be that much better for having Harvey - a four legged, red coated, dish washing, trash can emptying, shoe fetishist, bed hogging, Vizsla - in our family.
